Unconscious Performer Vs Conscious Performer: Who Ultimately Wins?

Let's dissect why cleaning out your (metaphorical) closet is the surest path to enjoying more abundance, cultivating deeper relationships, and living a truly fulfilled life.

Introducing..."The Conscious Performer" vs "The Unconscious Performer" 🤼‍♂️

The "Conscious Performer" is someone who has made time to explore "the darkness" of their own being.

The "Unconscious Performer" is not aware that they are driven by external validations. This means they will always chase the unconscious proverbial "carrot on the stick." (that you will ultimately never truly grasp!)

If you want to perform at your best and fully enjoy all life has to offer, then it is time to shed some light on the unconscious aspects of yourself.

Why is this critical for you to be aware of? Let me explain...

Do you know someone who stays busy "hustling?" Then you ask them what they want and the answer is "some type of material success/abundance.

(🙋🏻‍♂️ Old version of myself raising my hand!)

That's great and serves a purpose, but the unconscious performer has a huge blindspot. They don't understand the deeper "why" they want what they want.

"Hustlers" also tend to believe that if they heal parts of themselves, they will "lose their edge" and no longer have the drive to accomplish their goals.

Here's the underlying problem with that...

Research shows when we are intrinsically* motivated we will outperform those who are extrinsically* motivated.

(*Internally driven by happiness, purpose, passion vs *externally driven by power, fame, money)

Why is that?

Well, the "Unconscious Performer" is chasing the metaphorical "carrot on the stick." Technically there is never enough power, fame, and money that one can achieve.

While the "Conscious Performer" will outperform everyone for two main reasons (and a host of other reasons):

  1. Being intrinsically motivated allows you to be less affected by undesired outcomes, which levels up your stamina to play the long game (which is the real "hack" to long-lasting success).
  2. Not being driven by unconscious behaviors or patterns prevents you from "running off the metaphorical cliff."

"What is the metaphorical cliff?" I'm so glad you asked, let me tell you my story...

(But first, if you are time-crunched, stop now and scroll down to the bottom and download "The 7 Stages of Performance" to discover where you are and how to get to the next level!)

It was 2019 and I moved into my home in Ocean Beach, San Diego. I was never fulfilled deep down working in marketing, and since I was in middle school I said "I want to open my own business."

Then at the beginning of January 2020, the opportunity arose. It wasn't the best timing (as I had baby #2 coming in June!) but a location near my house opened up and this was my opportunity to open my first retail business. Let's GO!

Fast forward to the Spring of 2021, a little over a year into the business. (great timing right? Can you imagine opening your first retail business during a worldwide pandemic?!) I was overlooking my cash flow with a business coach and it become apparent I was not trending to be cash flow positive anytime soon.

I had a choice, push through and put myself in greater debt in the process, or get out early, call my losses, and move on.

It was heartbreaking at the time to make the hard choice to close the business. Yet the worst part was the ego dissolution that happened quickly after.

The unconscious part of me was driven to "succeed" in business (had the full vision to franchise & beyond!) so I could be considered a "success in other people's eyes."

Hindsight, the unconscious became conscious when I reflected on my authentic passions and purpose.

I realized that becoming the "greatest mindfulness expert or advocate" was never my true calling. (and the store was named Meditation Supply Store! Doh!)

Deep down, I was only driven by the extrinsic motivation to "prove" myself to others and "make lots of money."

[Key point: Do you know your deepest, darkest desires?]

When I dug deeper I learned that the "urge to be a winner" was not only my own unconscious desire, but also passed down from my family and society as a whole.

[Key Question: Are you unconsciously pursuing a goal of your parent's choosing, your grandparent's, or even society's?]

After I became conscious of that pattern, I was able to integrate it.

The underlying energy of "proving myself" was only holding me back from unlocking the next stage of performance.

Because when I healed and integrated that energy needing to "prove" it freed up the energy for "Effortless Ecstatic Creation." (or creating from a place of love and joy, aligned with my passions and purpose.)

This newsletter is an example, where I get to "joyfully" use my story to help you discover new insights, that can help you unlock your Golden Potential.

[Question for Reflection: Where in life are you creating purely out of love, passion, and purpose? It's OK if the answer is nowhere. We all start somewhere!]

Hindsight I now know that if I did not choose to close the store, I would still be chasing the extrinsic carrot. This would eventually lead me to run straight off a cliff to complete burnout and bankruptcy. (and who knows what the aftereffects of that would entail?!)

I wish there was someone who could have helped me through the process. Sharing the stages of performance and providing a simple roadmap of how to level up!

That is why I created "The 7 Stages of Performance" worksheet. To give you the awareness of where you are and how you can level up gracefully (compared to unconsciously flying off a cliff!).

Now, this worksheet is ultimately my opinion and I would love to get yours. So after you read it I would love to hear your thoughts.

What do you agree with, and disagree with?

Lastly, the worksheet will walk you through the Cycle of Creation.  Leaving you with actionable insights to reach your next stage of performance.

Let me know, what insights did you discover after reading it? How do you plan on taking action?

Because we can explore insights all day, but they never turn into gold unless you take some form of action!

I look forward to hearing from you.
